2010 JUDGING
Following their spring visit and assessment on 15 April, the
Yorkshire in Bloom judges have placed Skipton into the Silver Medal
position for 2010. Their comments were:
- Introduction
The judges were taken on a very interesting tour round Skipton. It is obviously a hard working group
with many partners and it was great to see the involvement of Craven College students and Stepping Stones
in many of the projects. The Butterfly Project by the Rotary Clubs is very simple, but an excellent way
to get children involved in their environment. The recent daffodil planting along The Bailey gives a riot
of colour. Areas of achievement are:
- Section A - Horticultural Achievement
The enhancement works around Skipton by the Stepping Stones group led by Hadyn and his team makes a real
contribution to the town, particularly at the Canal Basin and the Cenotaph bed. The plans to improve surrounds
to the bus station with extra planting and barrier
baskets. The involvement of volunteers, staff and
students from Craven College and Stepping Stones in the
bulb planting on The Bailey has made a real splash of
spring colour, which can be enjoyed by all the visitors.
The judges look forward to seeing the results of the
Butterfly Project organised by the Rotary Clubs - a well organised project and well supported by sponsors. The dedicated work at Holy Trinity Church to create a wonderful colourful oasis for all to enjoy.
- Section B - Environmental Responsibility
The development of the dry stone walling centre, the demonstration area and plans for other rural crafts
such as coppicing and hedge laying. The creation of natural habitats by the mixed whip planting by college
students. The new sculpture of Freddie Trueman.
- Section C - Community Participation
The organisation of the Let It Grow event in May, with workshops and demonstrations and involvement of
young people and the community. It is also a real opportunity for Skipton in Bloom to publicise their
campaign. The improved funding by the BID will create seed funding for further projects, allowing Skipton in
Bloom to make further improvements. The work of the Town Centre partnership to continue to encourage tourists
to visit the town.
